January 12,2010. A Monstrous Earthquake.
Response to Earthquake
Our response to the medical rescue from the earthquake has been swift but hard. It is a daunting challenge. So far AMHE has dispatched more than 410 health professionals to Haiti,(All speciaities have been involved, General surgery, orthopedics , urology, Emergency and Critical care, anesthesiology ,OB,Internist, pediatrician, RN) Most of them had to travel to Santo Domingo and then ride 10 hours by bus to P-A-Pce. Every week we have a new medical team arriving at P-a-Pce. Logistics has not been easy. We have worked with many groups : U of Nebraska, UM Medishare, DHHS and USAID. We are looking for a partnership with PIH. We are now listed by the Global Giving Organization (agency associated with USAID) to apply for matching fund and reimbursement of personal expenses as a volunteer. This week the Haiti relief team will be formally recognized by the Mount Sinai Medical Center leadership in New York.
My colleague Dr E Jerome will tell you about our vision and participation in the rebuilding of the medical sytem in Haiti.
Major Goals
AMHE must contribute to Improve the health status of people living in Haiti by establishing clear goals
Objectives
-Help strengthen Haitian institutions . Avoid competing with them.
-provide expert advice and technical support to major organizations.
-help establish emergency, trauma, rehabilitation, physical therapy, mental heath and critical care services at General Hospital
-Provide comprehensive health care delivery to the tent cities spread across the metropolitan area and other affected regions.
-assist in the rebuilding effort and strengthen the curriculum of the schools of Medicine, pharmacy, nursing and assist in the reconstruction of a new General Hospital (HUEH)
-develop collaborative partnerships withr NGOs, academic medical centers, professional healthcare organizations, and government looking at previous models like , AMHE-AMH, AMHE-GHESKIO, AMHE- MSSP
-establish a permanent office in Haiti for better coordination of our logistics..
-increase paying AMHE membership by two-fold over the next two years
-increase fundraising activities to collect $2,000,000.00 over the next two years
Action Steps to be taken:
-make needs assessment of the national healthcare system and determine areas of priorities for effective intervention. Working as we speak with DHHS and MSSP for a comprehensive database of health facilities in Hati.
-identify Haitian experts in the diaspora than could assist in responding to urgent needs such as trauma and emergency medical teams; critical care, hospital and clinic operations, healthcare delivery system, workforce development, and organizational planning
-collaborate with MSPP, public and private academic medical centers in Haiti and abroad, and international sponsors, as well as HUEH, and the Schools of Medicine, Midwifery, and Nursing in redesigning these institutions
-identify Haitian experts that can address these health care problems in the community
-strengthen our relationship with AMH (25 doctors perished during the earthquake). Maintain our collaboration with Gheskio
-identify NGOs, U.S., Canadian, European, Latin American, and Asian academic medical centers, professional healthcare organizations, and different government entities to develop a long term partnership based on common interests
-establish a list of healthcare volunteers and a tentative deployment schedule in Haiti until January 2011
-design goals, expectations, logistics and alternatives related to these deployments
